Primary Uses

Hypertension

Indications

This medication is indicated in patients with essential hypertension (Increased blood pressure without any secondary identifiable cause), angina (chest pain due to insufficient blood flow to heart muscle), and Hypertension due to pregnancy or post-myocardial infarction (Heart attack). It may also be used in adjunct to anti diuretics and ACE inhibitors in symptomatic chronic heart failure.

Side Effects

Patient taking this medication may experience postural hypotension (drop in blood pressure due to change in body position), bradycardia (decreased heart rate), dizziness (lightheadedness), headache, fatigue, GI upset, dry eyes, angina (chest pain due to insufficient blood flow to heart muscle), A-V block, skin reaction, visual disturbances, weight gain, dyspnea (shortness of breath), and hypercholesterolemia ( increased cholesterol levels).

Lactation

This medication is contraindicated in lactating females.

Driving

Please avoid driving when taking this medicine as it may affect your ability to drive.

Precautions

Before using this medication the patient should inform the prescriber about their medical history of poor cardiac reserve (inability to increase cardiac output to meet the metabolic requirements), hyperthyroidism (increased thyroid hormone levels), diabetes (uncontrolled blood sugar), unstable angina, and 1st degree A-V block. Withdrawal from this medication should be gradual in ischemic heart disease.

Contraindications

This medication is contraindicated in 2nd or 3rd degree A-V block (heart block when there are impaired electrical signals from atria to ventricle), uncontrolled heart failure, breathing conditions (asthma, COPD, and bronchospasm), cardiogenic shock, hepatic (liver) impairment, cardiogenic shock (inability of heart to pump efficiently), severe hypotension (low blood pressure), metabolic acidosis (electrolyte disorder with acid-base imbalance), phaeochromocytoma (tumor of adrenal gland tissue), and marked fluid retention.
